A Week of Spirit
Spirit Week has been a tradition for this time of year. NHS organizes this annual event for high school and elementary classes, each having a theme for each day throughout the week.
Compared to the past, this year's Pep Rally was held at the end, giving the week a great finale. Another change for the event was that the activities were held 15 minutes before or after lunch or break.
The following was a schedule of the week
Wednesday 27th - Class Theme Day
Thursday 25th - Mismatch Day
Friday 29th - Twin Day
Monday 3rd - Book/Movie Character Day
Tuesday 4th - Class Color Day
Spirit Week ended with the Pep Rally - all classes were invited to create their own cheer and wear their class color. At the end of the week the 10th graders had the most points. Creativity and originality were the main elements the judges searched for. In the end many were pleased with what the week produced: many pictures were taken with friends, laughter was heard, and the school was a cheerful sight showing that everyone was supportive of the event.
The 80th Annual Academy Awards
When most people think Academy Awards, they think it’s the day when big movies and even bigger movie stars get awarded. This year that really wasn’t the case. It actually really hasn’t been that way since the final Lord of the Rings movie, Return of the King, won the 11 awards which it was nominated for.
The awards for best actors and actresses were all won by foreigners. Best supporting actress went to Tilda Swinton, from England, for Michael Clayton. For those of you who haven’t heard of her before, she played the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia. She played her role in Michael Clayton very well and full of character but I thought that Cate Blanchett deserved it for her role as Bob Dylan in I’m Not There. Javier Bardem, from Spain, won the award for best supporting actor for his role as the killer in No Country for Old Men. Bardem basically had no competition since he won most of the other awards he was nominated for.
The award for best actress was won by Marion Cotillard, from France, for La Vie en Rose. The critics loved this French movie but, I was hoping this award would go to Ellen Page for her leading role in Juno. The award for best actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis, from England, for There Will Be Blood based on the 1927 novel Oil!. I think that Day-Lewis proved to be probably one of the best actors of all time with this roll. He showed how he can take basically any character and make it a great one. His performance in Gangs of New York, 2002, was also nominated for an Oscar but lost to Adrian Brody for his role in The Pianist.
Last year one of the greatest directors of our time, Martin Scorsese, won the award for best director for The Departed. The Coen Brothers won the award this year for No Country for Old Men. Previously they have filmed the low budget movies Blood Simple in 1984 and the award winning Fargo in 1996.
Obviously not all of the movies that we like are going to be awarded or sometimes even nominated. Movies like American Gangster and 300 definitely deserved to be considered. Well now that a new year of movies is to come, this year is definitely shaping up to be a much better year than the last. Movies such as The Incredible Hulk, Speed Racer, Iron Man, Wolverine and of course the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, all come out this year. So get your comic books ready because this is going to be the year of the super heroes.
